Mechanical Men

Have you ever listened to all things authors told you about character and tried to create one, but something went wrong. It didn’t feel real, it didn’t feel human. (sorry if you created an alien or beast) It didn’t look like a real personality. Merely an AI. As if the author could be seen behind the mechanical beast. Unless of course you want a robotic character, this is unwanted. What to do?

I would recommend looking at how people interact. What do they say or what do they do? How long do they speak? What makes them angry or sad…things like that. You may have already done this or based some of your characters on real people.

Then head on to this: I knew an honest attorney (definitely fictional) once who told his daughter what it took to understand people. He told the girl to climb into their skin. So, Atticus Finch had a great point, but he was reffering to real people… er in a fictional world. I’m trying to let you know that you need to really believe in your characters like an actor would. (Even a little bit more than a method actor)

Go ahead, give that mechanical beast a soul if you want.
